Import Cars from Japan to Kenya — How Pricing Works
When you import a car from Japan to Kenya, the total cost is made up of several parts. Understanding each one helps you budget accurately and compare quotes properly.
What our listed prices mean:
- FOB (Free On Board): The price of the vehicle including delivery to the Japanese port and loading onto the ship. This is the price displayed on our vehicle listings.
- CNF / CFR (Cost & Freight): FOB plus ocean freight from Japan to the Port of Mombasa. Request a CNF quote on any vehicle and we will confirm the current freight rate for Kenya.
Costs paid in Kenya (not included in FOB or CNF):
- Import duty, excise duty, VAT, Import Declaration Fee and Railway Development Levy — calculated by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) based on the vehicle's Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP), engine size, and age. These vary per vehicle; confirm current rates with KRA or a licensed clearing agent before you buy.
- Port charges and customs clearance at Mombasa
- NTSA registration and number plates
- Inland transport from Mombasa to your city (e.g., Nairobi, Kisumu, Eldoret)
We do not quote fixed "landed" prices, because Kenyan taxes change and depend on the specific vehicle. What we guarantee is a transparent FOB price and a confirmed CNF Mombasa quote before you pay — so you know exactly what you are paying us for, and can calculate the Kenya-side taxes accurately with your clearing agent or KRA's online calculator.
Kenya Import Rules for 2026 — What You Can Import
Kenya applies strict rules to used vehicle imports, enforced by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and KRA:
- 8-year age limit: Under standard KS 1515:2000, imported used vehicles must be no more than 8 years old from the year of first registration. For imports arriving in 2026, only vehicles first registered on or after 1 January 2019 are allowed.
- Right-hand drive only: Left-hand drive passenger vehicles cannot be imported for normal use.
- Pre-export inspection in Japan: Vehicles shipped from Japan must pass a KEBS-mandated roadworthiness inspection (conducted by QISJ in Japan) and receive a Certificate of Roadworthiness (CoR) before shipment. We coordinate this inspection for every Kenya-bound vehicle.
Import regulations can change. Always confirm the current requirements with KEBS and KRA, or ask our team before ordering — we will tell you honestly whether a specific vehicle is eligible for Kenya.
